GENERAL GUIDANCE FOR FAMILY MEMBERS AND COMPANIONS

We would like to inform some rules and routines for hospitalization at Santa Casa de Misericórdia Jesus Maria José for all patients, family members, companions and visitors, in order to provide a safer and more comfortable hospitalization in our Institution.

• Wash your hands before and after visiting the patient and/or use alcohol gel;

• It is NOT PERMITTED to wash clothes in the ward bathrooms;

• Use the bathrooms correctly to maintain cleanliness and organization;

• Do not place bags, purses and other objects on the patient's bed;

• Do not sit, lie down or place your feet on the patient's bed;

• Do not use the bed reserved for the patient;

• To avoid transmission of infection, follow the team's instructions when the patient is on contact, droplet or aerosol precautions;

• Remain with the patient under your responsibility and contact the healthcare team whenever necessary;

• Avoid visiting other beds and having contact with other patients in order to avoid contamination;

• It is PROHIBITED to use bed linen intended for patients. Therefore, companions are ALLOWED to bring bed linen for their own use.

GUIDELINES – FOOD

To ensure safety, proper recovery and to avoid health risks to patients, we ask that you NOT bring the following foods or drinks:

PROHIBITED FOODS

  • Food prepared outside the hospital (lunch boxes, homemade snacks or snacks bought outside);

  • Perishable foods without refrigeration (such as cheeses, meats, sweets with creams);

  • Sweets, candies, chocolates and industrialized snacks;

  • Energy drinks, artificial juices or soft drinks;

  • Foods high in fat, sodium or sugar;

  • Food of unknown origin or open packaging;

  • Processed meats: sausage, ham, mortadella, salami, etc.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

  • The patient may have specific dietary restrictions: such as low-sodium, hypoglycemic, enteral, soft or liquid diets.

  • External foods may contain hidden ingredients (such as salt, sugar, lactose, gluten, preservatives) that harm the treatment.

  • The hospital follows food safety protocols, and it is not possible to guarantee the same safety with food brought in from outside.

  • All patient nutrition is provided and monitored by hospital staff.

  • If there is a special need, consult your medical or nutrition team before offering any food.
